Our History

Castlegate Singers has been ably led by Richard Bennett who founded the choir in 1976 then by Phil Wood, and now by Val Hetherington.

We have gone from strength to strength and now consist of around 40 women of varying ages and abilities.

We currently perform a varied and vibrant repertoire and our concerts cater for all tastes and occasions. Over the years, the choir has sung everything from classical to popular, early to contemporary, traditional ballads, spirituals and folk music, as well as many Christmas favourites.

Large scale works for upper voice choirs are quite rare; however the choir has performed arrangements of choral works such as Fauré’s Requiem and Vivaldi’s Gloria, and works especially written for this voice medium such as Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and Psalms for Dancing by Douglas Coombes. Arrangements of existing music have also been made for the choir by Philip Wood, former Musical Director, Val Hetherington and by the Director of Nova Cantica, Douglas Cook.
